How to do a scalp clean-up

October 7, 2021

Scalp build-up, flakes, oily hair, dry hair, itchiness. Suffer from one or more? Then it sounds like you may need a scalp detox. Flaking in scalp build-up can be caused by haircare products, skin cells, sweat, oils, sebum, or a combination of all of the above.

Natural build-up can cause the following:

Dead Skincells

The skin cells covering your body are constantly dying and regrowing. When they die, they’re supposed to shed. New ones should grow to replace the old ones. But for some people, the dead skin cells do not shed fast enough, and this can lead to a buildup on your scalp. A buildup of dead skin cells will usually cause a lot of flakes to fall from your scalp.

Did you know sebum plays an important role in protecting your skin from infection? Some people produce more of this oil than others. However, once the body produces too much of it, it can do the opposite and that is when you will have build-up on your scalp.

Your scalp also produces sweat. The more active you are, the more sweat you produce. A sweaty scalp causes greasy hair and can make it smell unpleasant.

Product Buildup

Using lots of hair products? This can be the cause of product buildup in your scalp. Many thick waxy products will stick to your hair if you do not rinse them off properly in the shower.

How to get rid of scalp buildup?

Use the right shampoo and conditioner

Because a vast majority depends on the type of hair you have, we suggest using the Bain De Terre Green Meadow. This is a balancing product that will restore your moisture balance levels without causing buildup on your scalp. Make sure to wash your hair regularly and thoroughly and to focus on your scalp when washing rather than your ends.

Keep your hair detangled

Brush your hair daily to keep it detangled. This will reduce scalp buildup. When your hair is damp make sure to use a detangling product such as Instant Combing Green Meadow by Bain De Terre. It will reduce breakage and get rid of static. Perfect when paired with the Green Meadow shampoo and conditioner.
